New & Exclusive to Amathus: Tsiakkas Wines

wine bottle Pictures 012_edit (2)

So, last week was a very exciting week for Amathus as we saw the arrival of our new Tsiakkas Wines from Cyprus. Cyprus probably isn’t the first country that comes to mind when you think of wine, but this region is definitely renowned for its wine-making skills, producing some seriously impressive, flavoursome wines.

To a lot of people, Cypriot wines can be mistaken for ‘new world’ wines but what is actually quite surprising is that the history of winemaking in Cyprus is very old. In fact, it’s one of the oldest in the world. Recent excavations by Italian archaeologists suggest that wine-making in Cyprus may have existed 6,000 years ago but it wasn’t until the 1990’s when the country’s wine-making skills really began to shine.

The location of Cyprus, 50 miles off the south coast of Turkey, certainly provides a challenging environment for the nation’s winemakers. Over the years numerous international and native grape varieties, such as Xynisteri, have been planted. These varietals have spent hundreds – if not thousands – of years adapting to the hot and dry conditions and now form the basis of premium wine production in Cyprus.

Tsiakkas 2

Tsiakkas Winery is located in the village of Pelendri in the Pitsilia region of Cyprus, which is traditionally well-known for its grape vines. Costas Tsiakkas established the winery in 1988 which he runs together with his wife Maria. The winery produces a range of wines from grapes varieties such as Chardonnay, Xynisteri, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Tsiakkas Winery prides itself on producing high quality wines, which continue to improve in quality year after year.
Tsiakkas 3
So let’s take a look at some of the wines Tsiakkas Winery produce (each of the wines are now available to purchase from all Amathus stores and from our website too)
wine bottle Pictures 011

The Tsiakkas Xynisteri 2014 is an exceptional white wine made from the grape variety Xynisteri. On the nose you get aromas of lime, green apple, herbs and beautiful floral notes. Its high acidity completes its fresh, lively, yet delicate style. This wine is bottled fresh to retain its citrus aromas, has a medium body and long lasting finish.

wine bottle Pictures 012Tsiakkas Vamvakada 2013 is a red wine made from the indigenous variety Vamvakada. It’s a medium bodied wine with spicy currants and vanilla undertones. It has a distinct taste of dark forest fruits, firm tannins and is said to age extremely well over time. I guess the longer you leave it, the better!

Tsiakkas Winery is one of the producers that have returned to producing the historic dessert wine Commandaria. Tsiakkas Commandaria 2008 is made using natural fermentation avoiding the use of fortification, to retain its fruits. The wine is aged for 4 years in small oak casks at very low temperatures. On the nose you get hints of crème brulee, coffee, roasted dry nuts and quince! It’s best paired with sour desserts, so go for something lemony- we’d recommend the obvious choice and the best dessert ever.. lemon cheesecake!

We’re thrilled to have Tsiakkas Wines in our portfolio and we’re really excited for you all to try them!

If you would like any more information on any of the wines above, please visit our website or pop in to your nearest store.

Ones to watch in 2016..

With Christmas and New Year out the way it’s time to look ahead at what’s to come in 2016. January is supposed to be the month to relax and take it easy before all the madness starts again, but we’re way too excited to find out what’s in store for the drinks industry in 2016. Whether it’s a new product entering the market or an entirely new brand, we can’t wait to find out exactly what they are!

So let’s delve straight in and see which spirits and wines are on the rise and which ones we should expect to see more of, on the shelves and behind the bars.

Gin has definitely been the show stopper of 2015, with an ever growing range of new brands gracing the market. From the classic London Dry to the not-so-classics, made from all sorts of weird and wonderful botanicals. Sometimes even we find it hard to keep up!

The gin category is currently growing by 6.6% and is showing no signs of putting the brakes on and slowing down. As the category continues to grow, we’ll be experiencing greater things from this spirit with even more new and exciting gins set to appear on the market soon.

It’s going to be another, very very exciting year for gin and we can’t wait to see what’s to come!

With aquavit gradually appearing in more bars across the UK, 2016 is expected to be its year! Aquavit, in case you’re not familiar with it, is a Scandinavian spirit distilled either from grain or, more commonly, potatoes. To make it a bit simpler, think of it as a flavoured vodka.

In Scandinavia, aquavit is generally drunk neat, chilled or at room temperature but in the UK, aquavit is already showing signs that it can work well in mixed drinks and cocktails. Bartenders are already switching their gin in a Negroni and vodka in a Bloody Mary for a spicier kick that comes from using aquavit.

We’re one of the leading suppliers of aquavit in the UK so why not give some of our brands a try. Choose your favourite between: Linie Aquavit from Norway and Aalborg Aquavit from Denmark. If they don’t tickle your fancy then don’t worry, we’ve got plenty more aquavit for you to try.

Over the last year or so, vodka has taken a bit of a back seat after struggling to keep up with the growing popularity of spirits with more unusual flavours. However this year, vodka is said to be making a comeback with a steady flow of new premium brands, with an added edge, entering the market. Vodka is definitely fighting back to regain its status right up there, next to gin… watch out!

One of the most noticeable new trends in the UK spirit market is the rise of mezcal and we’re certainly very proud to have the best and most exclusive selection of mezcal available in the UK, including Del Maguey, Los Siete Misterios and Pierde Almas.

This new found love for mezcal has definitely taken people by surprise, considering not that long ago barely anyone had heard of this wonderful Mexican spirit. In an interview with the Morning Advertiser our Brand Champion and mezcal connoisseur, Jon Anders gives his take on this mezcal epidemic.

Here’s what he had to say:

‘Mezcal is the big one. It happened almost overnight, two or three years ago no one had heard of mezcal, now you can get it in bars all over the country. It taps into the same trend that gets people interested in whisky, as there are so many different expressions out there. It’s a premium spirit, we sell small volumes but consistently, which is over the odds for a high price imported spirit’.

‘People will be willing to search out places that serve drinks that have that authenticity and quality. They’re willing to learn, they read about something on the internet then they want to come to the bar and try some of the drink they hear about, to experiment’.

In 2016 we expect to see an even bigger rise in the popularity of mezcal, with more bars and restaurants making sure they’re stocked up!

Tequila is not just for traditional margaritas and shooters anymore. It’s a widespread spirit that can be purchased today, in most bars, clubs and restaurants. Tequila has an enormous history with the demand for the spirit still growing fast. Now, with so many players in the tequila game, tequila trends have been bigger than ever. New drinks and cocktails are frequently being developed with the vast selection of tequila brands and types that are now widely available.

Tequila has definitely earned a new name for itself as the world continues to discover the many things that it has to offer. It is certain that it won’t be losing any of its steam anytime soon!

Back in the eighties, every household had a bottle of vermouth stashed away in the drinks cabinet. But vermouth quickly fell out of fashion and was only ever used as an ingredient in the odd cocktail or two. Now it’s making a comeback, quickly becoming one of the most ‘on trend’ things you can drink. The classic version of vermouth was always dry but the category is slowly expanding with sweet and much more herbal versions now existing.

The demand for vermouth from bartenders is also rapidly increasing. It’s becoming one of the key ingredients in the ever growing cocktail culture as cocktails like the Manhattan, Negroni and Martini have started to become fashionable again…Plus, it’s absolutely delicious and every bar and restaurant should definitely have it at the top of their drinks list!

Contratto  offer a fantastic selection of vermouth’s, including a bianco, rosso and americano rosso.  The Contratto Vermouth recipe dates back to the early 19th century and is based on a combination of white wine, Italian brandy and over 50 delicately infused natural herbs, spices, roots and seeds. This traditional process is used to create a sophisticated elixir and a complex and well-balanced boutique aperitif that will make any vermouth based cocktail an exceptional experience. Give them a try!

Japanese Whisky

Hibiki Japanese Harmony

All over the world, people seem to be going mad for Japanese whisky. The growing popularity of Japanese produce in bars and restaurants has meant that Japanese whisky is in higher demand than ever before.

The story of Japanese whisky goes back about 90 years and owes its existence largely to two people – Shinjiro Torii and Masataka Taketsuru, who founded the distilleries behind the two largest producers – Suntory and Nikka. It’s crazy to think that it was first distilled in the 19th century but took up to the 21st century for the wider world to catch on as these days people can’t get enough.

With a growing trend of consumers that want more unique and exotic products, we expect that the demand for Japanese whisky will continue to increase well in to 2016.

Something a little different for your mixer

Consumers are continuously looking for new and exciting tonics to go with their spirits. They want something different, with an interesting flavour that is nothing like the ones you can pick up from any supermarket or corner shop.

Ferdinand’s has definitely hit the spot with their recently released Doctor Polidori dry and cucumber tonics.

Doctor Polidori’s Dry Tonic is infused with herbal essences, making it an aromatic filler for your favourite spirits. Herbal notes of basil and thyme combined with exotic notes of spicy cubeb pepper and instantly recognisable juniper make for a very interesting character.

Their cucumber tonic on the other hand is not equipped with the usual citrus aromas but instead, exciting cucumber notes. This tonic works spectacularly in a G&T, providing a refreshing and vibrant experience!

Greek Wines

Greek wines may be the most underrated on the planet. Why is a mystery, as the Greeks have been making wine since around 2000 BC. Certainly, the quality of Greek wines has improved dramatically since the 1980s, but this is the case for all winemaking countries… isn’t it?!

Over the past few decades a big shift has taken place with a reduction in overall vineyard area. This has resulted in fewer bulk and table wines being produced, which has actually lead to the rise in numbers of quality producers and boutique wineries.

This is exciting as the trends show that people are looking for cool, unusual grape varieties from emerging winemaking countries. White Greek grapes like Assyrtiko and Moschofilero and reds such as Vradiano and Agiorgitiko may not roll off the tongue but they are high quality grape varieties that are now being used to create complex, food friendly wines.

This trend is expected to continue well into 2016 so a continuous increase in the popularity of Greek wines looks very promising. So as you can probably predict, we can’t wait to see what 2016 has in store for some of our Greek wines producers, like Vrinioti and Tselepos. Exciting times!

Ginuary: Our favourite month of the year!

January is a hard month; credit card bills to pay, all the “new year, new you” rubbish including detoxes, diets and dry January. Let’s forget all that and start 2016 celebrating the best month of the year..Ginuary!

If you haven’t noticed already, lots more people are developing a new found love for gin. If they’re not talking about it, they’re looking for something new and exciting to add to their gin collection. New brands are being launched every month and bars are making sure they’ve got the latest one in.

Soho gin collection

With so much choice out there, unless you’re an expert, how do you know which one to pick? As this month is gin month, we’re here to help by introducing you to some of the world’s best gins. From the Netherlands to Germany, Spain and America, we’ve got something for everyone!

HoHJ Bobby's - Perfect Serve - Standing

Meet the delightful Bobby’s Schiedam Dry Gin. Life is too short not to experience its fragrant and complex flavour. A balanced blend of juniper, rosehips, cloves, lemongrass and cubeb peppers amongst others, create this extremely unique gin.

Bobby’s is at its best in a Bobby & Tonic, served over ice and garnished with an orange peel and cloves.

Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Gin is fun, delightful to the palette and offers all spirit enthusiasts among us a product they can play with, experiment with and be proud to have added to their collection. Infused with carefully hand-picked Riesling grapes from the steep shale slopes of the Zilliken estate, on the grand Saarburger Rausch site, make this gin an impressively unique tasting experience.

Serve it with Ferdinand’s Saar Vermouth an olive and a splash of olive juice and you’ve got yourself a Dirty Martini!

Established in 1782, A.van Wees distillery de Ooievaar claims to be the last authentic distillery left in Amsterdam, producing a range of Old Dutch genevers, bitters and liqueurs. Their products are creative compositions made from pure natural raw materials; a combination of fruits, flowers, plants, roots and seeds.

This premium version of the A. van Wees de Ooievaar Three Corners Dry Gin is made with more intense, concentrated flavours whilst still remaining elegant with notes of juniper, coriander and lemon. With its prominent flavour, this Dutch gin should definitely stand out in your Ginuary cocktails and drinks!

Gin Premium+copa.jpg

Established in 1880, Rives have been making their Special Gin in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain since 1980.

Rives Special Gin is a super-premium hand crafted gin, with a unique taste guaranteed to blow your mind! It’s easy to drink but still holds a powerful and complex flavour. It’s the only 100% Andalusian exclusive gin made in copper stills traditionally designed by the Master, John Dore. The perfect balance and taste of Rives Special Gin is achieved by the careful selection of 11 botanicals naturally harvested from around the world.

Greenhook American Dry Gin

Greenhook Ginsmiths American Dry Gin is definitely a favourite of mine, made from organic, New York State grown wheat, Tuscan juniper, coriander and Thai blue ginger, making it one of the boldest, most interesting gins out there.

Greenhook craft their gin using a technique called Vacuum Distillation. It allows them to distill their gin at low temperatures, which prevents the delicate aromas of their botanicals from being stewed with excessive heat during distillation. This unique process creates a beautifully fragrant gin with lifted aromas and vibrant flavours unlike any other!

So up next we have something a bit different and what a lovely surprise it is….Van Wees Amsterdamsche Old Genever!

Now genever differs slightly from gin in that although it is still flavoured with juniper it is also made using malt wine, which tends to give a greater depth and complexity of malt flavour and an overall sweeter finish. Genever is actually the original style of gin from Holland.

Its light gold tones and a tender voluptuousness come from at least six months ageing in oak casks. A good starter to get acquainted with an oude (old) genever.

It’s at its best drunk straight but can also be used as a premium ingredient in luxury cocktails. Give it a try, you’ll be amazed!

With Ginuary now in full swing and all these delicious gins to try, you’ll no longer be thinking about hitting the gym!

New Year with Amathus!

When someone asks you what drink you drink at New Year, the obvious choice would be Champagne.. and lots of it! New Year only happens once a year, so this year, why not try something different! I know you’ll be thinking, well what do I drink or serve up now?  Don’t panic.. we’re here to help with a New Year cocktail menu that will be a guaranteed hit. Out of the 6 cocktails we’ve chosen your ideal cocktail awaits!
So here goes…
If Champagne is your thing or if you’re not skilled when it comes to making cocktails, don’t worry this Champagne Cocktail will go down a treat! It’s so easy to make, an absolute classic and a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

Place a sugar cube onto a spoon and add to it a couple of drops of Van Wees Angostura. Drop the soaked sugar cube into a champagne flute and add 20 ml of François Voyer Cognac VSOP, top up with Nicolo & Paradis Blanc de Blanc. Delish!

With that signature olive garnish, there’s no cocktail as iconic as this one. This gin martini recipe is simple, sophisticated and absolutely delicious.
gin martini
For the perfect martini you only need 3 ingredients.

1 part Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Riesling Vermouth
5 parts Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Gin
And to garnish a green olive or lemon rind

Simply combine the gin and vermouth in a cocktail shaker, fill it halfway with ice and stir until well chilled. Once chilled, strain into a glass and finally garnish with an olive or a twist of lemon. For added effect (if you’re using lemon of course) run the slice of lemon around the rim of the glass.

To make your life even easier just pick up one of our Ferdinand’s Dry Martini Kits, all you’ll need then is the garnish that goes with.

New Year definitely calls for something new, so if you haven’t tried it before, make it mezcal. What we have here is a cocktail called Eyes Wide Shut made with the fabulous Del Maguey Mezcal.

The ingredients you need are:

35 ml Del Maguey Vida
50 ml Del Maguey Chichicapa
30 ml Walnut & Brazil Nut Orgeat
15 ml Cartron Poire William Liqueur
20 ml Pago Pear Juice

Shake all the ingredients together in a cocktail shaker then strain into a rocks glass over cubed ice. For an added je ne sais quoi garnish with a dehydrated pear slice.

Next up we have the Quince Martini made with:
60ml Zilliken Saar-Riesling (Kabinett, fruity sweet)
Garnish: Lemon zest
Stir all the ingredients with ice in a mixing glass and strain into a pre- chilled cocktail glass. Finally splash with lemon zest for that extra lemony zing.

The Voicemail Cocktail is a favourite of mine. All you need to do is stir the following ingredients in a mixing glass and garnish with a twist of lemon.
1 dash of Dale Degroff’s Pimento Bitter
Easy peasy!

 sm_1373535748_FIGRANAGA (2)

The Figranaga Cocktail could be your New Year show stopper. It’s a little trickier than the rest but don’t be alarmed this can be done. All you need is:

45ml Tequila Centinela Reposado
15ml Joseph Cartron Triple Sec
10ml Joseph Cartron Pomegranate Liqueur
15ml Carelli 34 Malbec 2013
20ml fresh lime juice
1 small spoonful of Fig jam

Frost the glass and rim with chili peppered salt. Pour all the ingredients in a shaker, shake and filter, then pour in to a glass.

If you serve up these cocktails you’ll be crowned host of the year!
Happy New Year, we hope you enjoy!

Christmas Day wine & food matches

With only 3 weeks to go, Christmas is fast approaching. If you’re similar to me you’ll only just be thinking about ordering your turkey, buying your Christmas presents and doing the dreaded food shop! Wouldn’t it be great if someone could do it all for you? Well here’s where we come in. Although we won’t be able to order your turkey or do your food shopping for you, the alcohol bit we’ve got covered!

With so much choice out there it’s difficult to know whether you’ve bought the right fizz to drink at breakfast or the right white wine to go with your turkey. Well, panic no more because we’ve selected them all for you. Each bottle we’ve chosen is guaranteed to match perfectly with your Christmas food favourites. So here goes….

1st meal of the day and the most important.. breakfast! Whether you have smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, bacon sandwiches or a full English breakfast, it has to be fizz! Our recommended favourite is Nicolo et Paradis NV Blanc de Blanc. It’s fresh, vibrant and has a long finish.

NIC_6116DET (9)

With this, you can’t go wrong, everyone loves a few bubbles in the morning!

Once breakfast is done, it’s time to get the turkey in the oven and put the Christmas jumpers and music on. The countdown to Christmas dinner starts here!

Matching wines with your Christmas dinner isn’t easy. Not everyone around the table likes the traditional turkey and a lot of the time there’s more than one choice of meat. With so many flavours to contend with, how do you know that you’ve got the balance right? To help you out here’s what we’d serve up with each meat.

With turkey, it has to be our Fess Parker Ashley’s Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County. It’s rich and luscious showing flavours of citrus, pear and apple fruits, with hints of toasty oak.

If you prefer your red to white then I’d go for the Elk Cove Pinot Noir.

It’s  an elegant, silky red with flavours of blackberry and cherry compote, making it an ideal accompaniment for roast turkey.

With beef it’s got to be red wine and lots of it! Our choices would be either the Grandes Serres Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2012 , a very modern styled Rhone red with tonnes of spiciness and complexity.

Châteauneuf du Pape rge La Cour des Papes

Or the Maverick Twins Barossa GSM 2013, a blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre. This wine is vibrant with fruit characters reminiscent of dark chocolate and sweet raspberries. Yum yum!

Again with lamb, it’s got to be red. This time, I’d go for the Ochoa Reserva, made from the finest Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet varietals. It’s an elegant classic which is round and complex.

SWOR_reservaAS 750 x 768

The Carramimbre Crianza 2011 is another cracker with lamb. It’s intense spicy, rich flavour, with cinnamon, mint and vanilla notes perfectly complement roast lamb.

If goose is your Christmas Day choice then we’d recommend you serve it with the Werner GG Riesling. It’s acidity and freshness cuts through the rich gamey flavour of roast goose.

Werner 2013 Schweicher Annaberg Riesling Trocken

Again, if you love red more than white it’s got to be the La Barbotaine Sancerre Rouge. It has big red currant and white pepper aromas with cardamom, truffle and red plum flavours. Truly fantastic!sancerre-rouge

Once Christmas dinner is done it’s straight on to the pud. Whether it’s Christmas pudding or mince pies, we’ve chosen you a wine that will go with each.

With Christmas pudding, we’d recommend something sweet. The  Woodstock Muscat has intense flavours of dried fruits and toffee, making it the perfect partner for the rich and indulgent Christmas pud.

No question about it Port has got to be drunk with mince pies. Try our Cálem Tawny 20 yr Port that combines rich, dried fruits with flavours of butterscotch and roasted nuts. Perfection!

Calem 20 Years old

If you would like any more information on the products above please visit our website or pop into your nearest Amathus store.

Merry Christmas!

Contratto Masterclass and Cocktail Competition

On Monday, 9th November, we spent the afternoon at Evans and Peel to host a Contratto masterclass and cocktail competition. If that wasn’t exciting enough, we were lucky to be joined by Anja Cramer, owner, with husband Giorgio, of Contratto distillery.

Contratto was founded in 1867 by Giuseppe Contratto. The winery is known as the oldest producer of sparkling wine in Italy, in fact, the Metodo Classico 1919 Contratto Extra Brut was the first vintage sparkling wine ever made in the country.

In 150 years of wine making, Contratto went from producing sparkling Moscato and red wine to still wines, vermouth, tonics and syrups. The winery is now owned by La Spinetta (a family run business) who acquired it in 2011. Since then they have reintroduced Contratto to the world and continued to preserve and uphold its 140-year-old tradition and top quality.

Evans and Peel isn’t like most bars you’ll find in London. It’s an underground, hidden cocktail bar located near Earl’s Court tube station.  I don’t know whether you’ve been before, but it’s not the easiest place to find. After 10 minutes walking up and down the same street looking for a big sign saying ‘Evans and Peel’, which didn’t exist, I finally had to ask someone to point me in the right direction.

I won’t spoil it for you, but this place is definitely worth a visit if you haven’t done so already! All I can say is, expect the unexpected!

So the masterclass kick started at 2 o’clock and on tasting were 3 vermouths, Bianco, Rosso and Americano Rosso, a bitter and an aperitif. The flavours were incredible, each having their own individual taste and uniqueness.

Just a few tasting notes for you, so you can see how different the ingredients are for each of the Contratto products.

Up first was the  Contratto Vermouth Bianco, which had flavours of coriander seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, bitter orange peel, sage, sweet orange peel, liquorice roots and many more….the list is endless!

Next we tried the Contratto Americano Rosso Vermouth, which had flavours of ginger, mint leaves, hibiscus and hawthorn flower, nettle leaves and bitter and sweet orange peel.

The final vermouth we tasted was the Contratto Rosso, which had flavours of hawthorn flowers, coriander seeds, marjoram leaves, chamomile leaves, aloe juice, cinnamon, mint leaves and ginger roots.

After the vermouth’s, it was on to the Contratto Bitter and Aperitif.

The original recipe for Contratto Bitter dates back to 1933 and is based on a mixture of delicately infused, premium natural herbs, spices, roots and seeds combined with Italian Brandy. Flavours include cardamon, enula bell, swertia, nettle and bitter and sweet orange peel.

Last but not least was the Contratto Aperitif, it had flavours of tangerine peel, juniper berries, rhubarb, ginger and wormwood. This complex yet well-balanced boutique aperitif is capable of turning any aperitif based cocktail into a wonderful experience.

I’d recommend that if you haven’t sampled these products before, you definitely need to now…. delicious!

Once the masterclass had finished there was just enough time for a quick break before the cocktail competition started at 3.30pm.

So, similar to other cocktail competitions we’ve hosted, each bartender had to come up with cocktails on the spot. They could enter as many drinks as they liked and were judged purely on taste alone – not presentation. To make it a bit different this time round, as well as having the use of all the Contratto products, we selected a range of additional spirits the bartenders were allowed to use. These included  a bottle of Rives Special Gin, Rhum Clément Blanc, Château de Laubade Armagnac, 1615 Acholado Pisco and Pierde Almas Mezcal.

The ones to impress and judging the competition were Nick Bell (Amathus Retail Manager), Anja Cramer (owner of Contratto distillery) and Simon Epale (Bar member at Evans and Peel). The winning prize was a trip to Italy, home of Contratto, and all runners up received a bottle from the Contratto collection. Oh and a Contratto apron too!!

The competition was extremely high making it a very tough decision for our 3 judges. After a lot of backwards and forwards and re-tasting the cocktails, a decision was made. Drum roll, please…

In third place was Csaba Toth from Oblix Restuarant. Congratulations Csaba!

In second place was Giovanni Graiadei from The Blind Pig at Social Eating House. Congratulations Giovanni!

and in, first place and the lucky winner of the trip to Italy was…….

Filippo Brunelli from Ceviche in Soho. He stole the show with his signature cocktail made up of Contratto Fernet, 1615 Pisco Acholado, lime juice, ginger ale and Angostura Bitters.

I’d just like to say a big thank you to Anja Cramer for hosting the Contratto masterclass and judging the cocktail competition. Thank you to our 2 other judges, Nick and Simon, well done boys and finally a huge thank you to Evans and Peel for letting us host the event at your amazing bar.

Del Maguey Cocktail Competition and UK final

Last Monday (26th October) we welcomed Del Maguey into our Soho store for a special mezcal masterclass hosted by Michael Gardner and Steve Olson.

The masterclass was a rare opportunity for people to taste the mezcals, whilst learning about their history, heritage, culture and sustainability. It was incredible to see how the mezcal category has changed since Ron Cooper (Founder of Del Maguey) began importing the spirit 20 years ago. Before Cooper, the wider world had little idea this organic, 100% agave product existed.

Here’s how the story of Del Maguey began. In 1970, in a blur of tequila, Cooper and his friends questioned the existence of the Pan American Highway. Two weeks later, Cooper and his artist friend set off in a VW camper van on a four-month journey to find and travel down the Pan American Highway. It did, in fact exist and his experiences in Oaxaca lead him to discover mezcal which, to his surprise, fast became a spirit recognised all over the world. From this day forward, Del Maguey was born.

Thinking about it… If Cooper never travelled the Pan American Highway, where would mezcal be today?

Once the masterclass had finished, it was up and off to Wahaca for the 2015 Del Maguey UK Cocktail Competiton final, where each bartender would be battling it out to win a trip to Oaxaca (home of Del Maguey).

Our 6 lucky finalists and in with a shot were:

James Bowker from Edgbaston Boutique Hotel & Cocktail Lounge in Birmingham
Martin Hudak from the American Bar at Savoy in London
Juan Martinez from Taqueria in London
Milan Kresan from Gong Bar at Shangri-La Hotel in London
Alex Proudfoot from Crazy Pedro’s in Manchester
and Robyn Wilkie from Mash in London

On the judging panel (and the ones to impress) were:

Erik Lorincz, Head Bartender at the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel
Monica Berg, Bar Supervisor at Himkok
Michael Gardner, Partner of Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal
and Steven Olson, aka wine geek, and founding partner of Beverage Alcohol Resource

The competition kick started with a speech from Steve Olson where he welcomed everyone with a traditional Zapotec toast. The Zapotec toasts to life and the health of one another. While looking into the eyes of each of your companions, you must proclaim to the group ‘Stigibeau’ (Stee-gee-bay-oo) which can roughly be translated into.. ‘to all the good things’.

At 4 o’clock the contestants were allowed to enter the room where they found a table containing all their cocktail ingredients. They then had time to prepare their drinks, which included 2 cocktails for the judges and a batch of 25 for the audience to try. All preparation had to be completed in time for the competition to start at 5 pm.

When the competition finally began each competitor, in turn had 10 minutes to make and present their cocktails to the judges. Whilst the judges were sampling the cocktails the competitors were given extra time to finish their cocktail batch and hand it out to the audience.

Whilst the competition was in full swing, Wahaca served up complimentary tacos and quesadillas for everyone to enjoy.

Once everyone’s 10 minutes was up, all that was left was for the judges to make the winning decision. After a lot of deliberation, a decision was made and the winners were ready to be announced.

So without further ado, the Del Maguey UK cocktail competition winners were….

In 3rd place Martin Hudak from American bar at Savoy, London.

In second place James Bowker from The Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Martin and James didn’t leave empty handed, receiving a bottle each from the Del Maguey collection. Congratulations boys!

So with 2rd and 3rd place out the way, all that was left was to announce 1st place….

A huge congratulations goes to Alex Proudfoot from Crazy Pedros, who wowed the judges with his Del Maguey cocktail, A Life Less Ordinary. He gave an outstanding performance and is a well-deserved winner of the 2015 Del Maguey UK final. Well done Alex… now pack your bags, you’re of to Mexico!

In true Mexican style, the competition ended with a final Zapotec toast, where Steve Olson thanked everyone for coming along. Salud!

There’s not much left for me to say apart from a big thank you to everyone who took part and came to support. Thanks to the wonderful judges, Erik, Monica, Michael and Steve and finally to Wahaca for letting us host the Del Maguey cocktail competition in your amazing restaurant.
